February 2, 2007 Laurel Museum Reopens On Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 the Laurel Museum will reopen with its current exhibit, 'Stories from the Attic: 10 Years of Collecting." New information and objects will bring a new focus to the African American Life in Laurel section of the exhibit. See the rooms of Montpelier filled with a dazzling variety of stitched art, from needlepoint to ribbon work. The colors, designs and originality of Needleart will take your breath away! Judges choose winners in several categories, and you the visitor are invited to vote for the "People's Choice" award. Demonstrations of various needleart techniques are given daily. Through hands-on experiences in gardens and with field crops, observing and caring for livestock and performing the daily routines of the 18th century child, participants will experience life as it may have been in the late 1700s. Dr. Denise Meringolo is an Assistant Professor of History and Public History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She received her Ph.D. in American Studies from The George Washington University and she has over 15 years of experience in the field of public history. She was honored to serve as the Accokeek Foundation's Scholar-in-Residence from 2005-2006 where she convened a meeting of land conservancies and preservation associations. Lawn and garden watering make up 40% of total household water use in the summer. Diverting water from storm drains decreases the impact of runoff to our waterways. The workshop will cover installation, maintenance, and landscaping. This workshop is free, registration is required. Rain Barrels are available for $80 each. You may register for a workshop even if you decide not to purchase a barrel. Those purchasing a barrel should arrive at 12:30 pm. Visitors are invited to enjoy a cup of tea, cookies, popcorn, and join in singing carols by the fire. The Museum Gift Shop will be open. Light rain or light snow showers. Admission $2. Members free.
