Laurel Museum Reopens
On Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 the Laurel Museum will reopen with its
current exhibit, 'Stories from the Attic: 10 Years of Collecting."
New information and objects will bring a new focus to the African
American Life in Laurel section of the exhibit.

Needleart 2007
Sponsored by Stitching Pretty of Laurel, Montpelier hosts the 12th
annual Needleart show. See the rooms of Montpelier filled with a
dazzling variety of stitched art, from needlepoint to ribbon work.
The colors, designs and originality of Needleart will take your
breath away! Judges choose winners in several categories, and you
the visitor are invited to vote for the "People's Choice" award.
Demonstrations of various needleart techniques are given daily.

Hooked Rug Exhibit
Traditional and modern works, all created by the Mason-Dixon Guild
of Rug Hookers, will be on display throughout the mansion. See

7 Hands-On History Day for Kids
Through a variety of hands-on activities, you'll learn what it was
like to be a Patriot in the Revolutionary War army. Try on a uniform,
climb into an army tent, learn how to send secret messages to the
troops with fifes and drums, and more.

7 & 8 The American Revolution: The Philadelphia Campaign of 1777
To capture Philadelphia, the British sailed up the Cheasapeake Bay
before marching inland from Elkton,MD. This bus tour will follow the
invasion route with stops at Brandywine Battlefield Park, Cliveon - the
Chew family mansion (and the scene of the Battle of Germantown) and
Valley Forge National Historical Park. We will stay overnight in
Philadelphia and visit Independence National Historic Park.

10-12 Children's Workshop: Colonial Child
Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to attend a 3-day workshop on
Colonial Life, from 9am-3pm, July 10-12. Through hands-on experiences
in gardens and with field crops, observing and caring for livestock and
performing the daily routines of the 18th century child, participants
will experience life as it may have been in the late 1700s. Crafts and
nature hikes will round out the experience. Cost is $150 per child.

19 Land Preservation Workshop
This workshop is for you, whether you want to preserve your land for
future generations, save working landscapes in our community,
access equity that's tied up in your land, protect the environment,
reduce your tax liability, or leave a legacy through a charitable gift.
This workshop is presented in partnership by Prince George's
County Soil Conservation District, Charles County Planning and
Growth Management, and Southern Maryland Agricultural

In celebration of the Accokeek Foundation's 50th Anniversary, Dr.
Denise Meringolo will give a talk about the unique views that
inspired the preservation of the Foundation's landscape. Dr. Denise
Meringolo is an Assistant Professor of History and Public History at
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She received her
Ph.D. in American Studies from The George Washington University
and she has over 15 years of experience in the field of public
history. She was honored to serve as the Accokeek Foundation's
Scholar-in-Residence from 2005-2006 where she convened a
meeting of land conservancies and preservation associations. She
also helped plan and implement the Foundation's new signage
project. No registration is required, and the event is free. Education

11 The War of 1812: The British Invasion of Prince George's County
Noted War of 1812 scholar Dr. Ralph Eshelman will accompany our bus tour
with stops along the invasion route including Bendict - where the British
landed; the site of the Battle of Bladensburg and sites in Upper Marlboro
- where local residents played key roles in the events of the day. The
tour will also visit the 12th Annual Battle of Bladensburg Encampment at
Riversdale.

18 Rain Barrel Workshop
Save Money, Help the Environment! Lawn and garden watering make
up 40% of total household water use in the summer. Diverting water
from storm drains decreases the impact of runoff to our waterways.
The workshop will cover installation, maintenance, and landscaping.
This workshop is free, registration is required. Rain Barrels are
available for $80 each. You may register for a workshop even if you
decide not to purchase a barrel. Those purchasing a barrel should
arrive at 12:30 pm. The workshop will be held at the Accokeek

Betty DeKeyser, who has done extensive research on early Maryland
families, will do a presentation on the Scotish ancestral homes of early
Maryland families. Ms. DeKeyser has traced her own family to their

Warm up your winter evenings with music, candlelight and fragrant holiday
greens at Montpelier. Local garden clubs decorate the mansion's rooms in

8 Winter's Eve
Join us on Saturday, December 8, 2007, from 5 to 8 pm at the National
Colonial Farm. Kick off the winter season with our annual Winter's Eve
Celebration. Candlelight and 18th century lanterns will illuminate the
seasonally decorated historic buildings and pathways. Visitors are invited
to enjoy a cup of tea, cookies, popcorn, and join in singing carols by the
fire. The Museum Gift Shop will be open. Light rain or light snow showers.
Admission $2. Members free. Admission fee will be waived in lieu of a canned
food donation, one per person, to support the Maryland Food Bank. Please
