SITES AND MUSEUMS
Surratt House Museum

Built in 1852, this family plantation house also
served as a tavern, post office, and hostelry in the crucial decade
before the Civil War. During the war, it was a safehouse in the
Confederate underground system, which flourished in Southern Maryland.
The Surratt family would be drawn into schemes by John Wilkes Booth to
kidnap President Abraham Lincoln. When the plans turned to
assassination, Booth stopped here on his flight out of Washington.
Today, it offers a glimpse of life into middle-class, 19th
century life with costumed guides, special exhibits and events.
